HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

Economics department is one of the oldest departments of this college. It started functioning in 1948. It offers both under graduate and post graduate courses in Economics. There are six permanent faculty members and two guest lecturers (FDP vacancy) in the department. Among them two holds Ph.D and others are pursuing research. The research and project works undertaken by the faculty members add to the credit of the department. The B A course in Economics has Political Science and Indian History as subsidiaries. Postgraduate course in Economics was introduced during the academic year 1996-97. With the delinking of the Pre-degree course, the department offers B A Economics (semester course) and M A Economics (Semester course). From the academic year 2010-11 onwards Choice Based Semester System has been introduced.
OUR GOAL
In line with the vision and mission of our college, the department of economics has set its goal as empowering the students with holistic education. We, as a team, give exposure to students about changing economic scenario and mould them as responsible citizens. We train the students to lead a healthy life to strengthen the society and focus on women empowerment as well.
OUR OBJECTIVES
  • Academic excellence on par with international standards
  • Blossoming of full personality of individual students
  • Capacity building for the World of work
  • Inculcating social responsibilities and commitments to promote equality and justice
  • Harmonious living with people and nature
CURRICULAM DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT
Curriculum is designed and developed by the University of Kerala. But we, the faculty members regularly obtain feedback from alumni, stake holders and recruiting agencies regarding the changes that are to be made in the curriculum. These suggestions are informed through the Board of Study members and are considered for curriculum revision by the University. From 2010-11 onwards we are following the restructured curriculum for UG programme, which is Choice Based Credit and Semester System, the details of which are mentioned below.

CHOICE BASED CREDIT AND SEMESTER SYSTEM (CBCSS)
INNOVATIONS
Semesterisation, Choice based Credit System, Continuous Assessment and Grading for Under Graduate Programmes in Kerala.
THE FOUR PILLARS OF THE UG REFORM
The four major aspects of the newly prepared reforms are
1.                  Semesterisation
2.                  Choice based credit system
3.                  Continuous assessment
4.                  Grading

1. Semesterisation
In Kerala University Semester system has been in use for BA Degree Course in 2010 onwards. Almost all PG programmes in various Universities in Kerala run on semester system.
2. Choice – Based Credit System.
The choice Based credit system is more fair to the Students, permitting her to seek knowledge that suits her varied interests, aptitudes and also ensures the interdisciplinary knowledge requirement. In an age where student mobility is on the increase this system will ensure that our academic programmes are understood well by other educational institutions and students find it easy to transfer their credits across institutions.
3. Continuous Assessment
A continuous assessment in the semester system is spread through out the duration of the course and is done by the teacher teaching the course through various means including written tests, MCQ-based quizzes, Mini-Projects, presentations, group activities, field visits etc.
4. Grading: The Basic Idea
The migration from marks to letter grades in UG restructuring is a major transformation is academic practices in Kerala.

Aim of the course
The course tries to acquaint the aspirants with the wider perspective of economics and its methodology. The course also endeavours to bring in some of the fundamentals principles of economics and to update and expand basic informatics skills and attitudes relevant to the emerging knowledge society and also to equip the students to effectively utilize the digital knowledge resources for their chosen courses of study. The course is meant to enable the students to understand economic concepts clearly with the help of mathematical methods.
  • To review the basic concepts of functional knowledge in the field of informatics.
  • To review functional knowledge in a standard office package and popular utilities.
  • To create awareness about nature of the emerging digital knowledge society
  • To create awareness about social issues and concerns in the use of digital technology.
  • To create awareness about major informatics initiatives in India & Kerala
  • To impact skills to enable students to use digital knowledge resource in learning.
  • To equip the students to apply mathematical techniques in economics
  • To express economic theories in diagrammatic and quantitative terms.
Thereby introducing the economists way of locating an economic issue thereby laying the foundation of the programme.
1.2.Academic flexibility
The department is offering UG and PG programmes in Economics. As far as PG programme is concerned, we are having flexibility in the choice of optional papers. We have opted Agricultural Economics, International Economics, Industrial Economics, Public Economics etc as optional papers. In the newly introduced CBCS system, there is an open as well as an elective course which, the students could opt. Open course we have adopted is Human Resource development.
1.3. Feedback Mechanism
The present Feedback Mechanism is based on a three tier valuation method. This includes feedback at Institution level, Department level and faculty level. The evaluation of the student feedback helps the department to assess the faculty performance and to take remedial actions in Teaching, learning and evaluation programmes
1.4. Curriculam Update
The curriculum for the UG and PG courses are restructured in 2008 by the respective Board of Studies taking into consideration the changes that are taking place in the requirements of stake holders and emerging changes in the higher education sectors. From 2010-11 onwards we are following the restructured curriculum for UG programme, which is Choice Based Credit and Semester System.
